Monday - Friday / 10pm - 6amMAJOR FUNCTION:To provide support to
the tool room and pressroom for the heat treatment, finishing,
surface grinding and modification of tooling.To operate tool room
equipment in support of tool building, tool modification, and
replacement parts to aid the production efforts of the
company.MAJOR TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES:Plan and perform machining
operations to construct, and modify dies, die blocks, inserts,
punches, fingers, slides and press mechanical parts.Includes the
requirement to organize work, procedures, sequences, methods,
fixturing, tools and materials.Perform work from blue prints,
sketches and verbal description of tool requirements, production
problems and required finished part dimensions and tolerances.May
include final finishing and polishing of dies and tooling when
performed under the leadership of Tool & Die Makers and/or Tool
Room Machinists.Some work involves the performance of secondary and
support operations to prepare and/or finish individual tooling
pieces.Perform final grinding of new punches, dies, inserts and
spacers, or modify/sharpen existing or new tooling, with the
surface grinder or I.D./O.D. grinder to produce required final
dimensions and surface finish and flatness.Operator is required to
plan work, arrange priorities, set-up equipment and adjust feeds,
speeds and grinding stroke to produce parts in conformance with
tolerances specified.May include a requirement to devise holders
and/or fixtures to hold part or position part at appropriate angle
to the grinding or sanding surfaces.Work is performed to close
tolerances and requires examination of part relative to the
required dimensions, since the operations performed on the majority
of the parts are the final operations before issue to the Tool
Control/Storage section or the Pressroom.Perform final inspection
and check on finished parts to assure that completed parts meet the
dimensional and tolerance requirements of the tooling print.
Involves checking dimensions such as length, height, hole
diameters, O.D., finish requirements, hardness and completeness of
operations.Operate band saws and "cut-off" saw to produce tool
steel blanks for the production of tools.Determine the quantity,
length, diameter and material specifications for blanks needed and
select material from storage racks. Includes a requirement to audit
the inventory supply of available tool steel raw material and
notify Tool Room supervisor of pending shortages.Includes a
requirement to perform preventive maintenance on the equipment
operated, to replace broken or worn blades, and to assure adequate
inventory of replacement blades.Rework, sharpen and modify tooling
to correct deficiencies, accommodate tool wear, or adapt obsolete
tooling to perform permanent or temporary "duty" as a replacement
for broken, missing or necessary duplicate tools.May involve
changing the dimensional requirements or tolerances of new tooling
that is found ineffective. Process may involve "trial and error"
and small incremental adjustments to eliminate production part
defects and press malfunctions.Operate heat treat furnace to harden
finished tooling to specified hardness.Involves the determination
of time, temperature and possible quench or cooling requirements to
properly harden the material used, and setting controls to reflect
requirements.Check hardness after cooling by using Rockwell
hardness tester.Sandblast, or sand hardened tools to finish to
required surface quality.Engrave tooling identification number on
finished tooling before delivery to tool control.Occupation
requires the ability to use all hand tools, measuring devices and
machine tools common to the Toolroom Machinist trade. Requires the
ability to read and interpret tooling blue prints and to use
measuring instruments such as micrometers, verniers, depth mics,
and dial indicators.Operates tool room equipment such as the Studer
Grinder, Sunnen Hone, Bridgeport Mills, Lathes, Surface Grinders
and sanders to provide support to the pressroom, Tool & Die Makers
and Tool room Machinists. Occupation requires a detailed knowledge
of all the above machines, and will include operation of more than
two of the named equipment on a regular basis.Requires the ability
to work to close and demanding tolerances with attention to detail
when producing parts that are ground and/or finished to final
dimensions.Determine and select proper feeds and speeds to produce
desired surface finish from machine tool and cutting tool or
grinding wheel used.Responsible for cleanliness and neatness of
surrounding area, and the performance of all duties with the
exercise of safe operating procedures to avoid creating an injury
hazard for self or others.Occupation includes a requirement to
follow Environmental Health & Safety procedures.Other duties as
assigned by supervisor for additional experience and/or training or
refinement skills or in preparation for advancement.EDUCATION AND
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:EDUCATION: High School Education and
additional courses such as machine tool operation, shop math,
precision measuring, layout, blue print reading, tooling
applications, etc.EXPERIENCE: No experience required with
completion of a Machine Tool Operation course or the
equivalent.
