Job Description:
The primary job function is developing new and innovative
products and processes from concept to commercialization. The
partner in this role is responsible for developing technologies to
support exploration and development of innovation concepts,
developing new products in emerging categories along with
optimizing costs, production methods and/or quality. This role is
responsible for following the R&D Product development process
by identifying new ingredients, creating formulas, testing with
pilot plant work, industrial plant scale-up, specification
creation, and completing shelf-life studies. This role will also
work as part of cross functional teams to gather necessary
information and launch new products & processes. Expertise in
starch technology and/or plant-based proteins and their application
in dairy alternatives is required.This position may be a Principal
Scientist based on experience.What you'll do:Explores, identifies
and implements use of new ingredients and technologies to advance
our products and processes with a competitive edge and
profitability.Conducts primary research on non-dairy ingredients,
innovative products and new manufacturing processes.Demonstrates
excellent communication skills including effectively conveying
technical concepts to others, both written and verbally.Defines
work plans, conducts experiments and writes project
reports.Develops a comprehensive understanding of the department
SOP. Develops a good understanding of regulatory standards and SFI
labeling practices. Stays current with changing regulatory
information and communicates information that impacts SFI.Has a
broad area of expertise; recognizes products and/or processes that
may be patentable in their development.Promotes the use of new
technology and demonstrates willingness to take risks. Has several
examples of technical breakthroughs and a well-developed core area
of technical expertise of relevance to SFI. Demonstrates a good
understanding of SFI philosophies, processes and systems and uses
this knowledge to meet customer requirements. Works to establish a
network within SFI to effectively get projects completed. Maintains
a goodunderstanding of the food industry and competitors that
impact SFI. Maintains a network of key contacts with academia,
governmentand/or industry.Assembles and leads cross-functional
teams in the development of new products and processes which are of
high impact to SFI. Effectivelyhandles pressures that may come from
customers, suppliers, team members and leadership. Takes a firm
stance on their technical expertise when necessary.Conveys complex
technical concepts to non-technical partners at all levels of the
organization, including senior leadership. Writes technically
complex reports and develops position papers on issues of high
impact. Independently plans and conducts presentations of
significant impact, and effectively gives presentations to a wide
audience.Partner in this position must possess the following
skills:Advanced formulation knowledge in starch systems and
functionality along with plant protein functionality in developing
plant-based dairy alternatives. Knowledge of applications in dairy
is a plus.Ability to perform optimization projects based on their
understanding and knowledge of industrial capabilities.Proven
ability to conduct trials across multiple production facilities or
categories. Capable of performing work during off shifts and
decision making without support.Complex formulation set up and an
understanding of pricing and raw material input adjustments.Ability
to collaborate with the pilot plant and engineering on innovative
use of equipment to mimic plant processes.High level of ability to
work independently.Excellent communication and presentation
skills.What you need to succeed:Bachelor's degree in Food/Dairy
Science or closely related field required. Masters or PhD
preferred.10+ years' experience in Research & Development,
Innovation, Operations, Engineering or Formulations.Must have
experience in starch technology and/or plant protein technology
with preferred experience in developing plant-based dairy
alternatives.Experience in yogurt, natural cheese, cream cheese or
beverage development is a plus.Strong ability to think outside the
box and to formulate food products.Ability to lift up to 40lbs as
needed occasionally in order to perform work functions in pilot
plant.Ability to ambulate on uneven and/or wet surfaces and to go
up and down stairs.Ability to drive or have adequate transportation
to travel to different plant locations in Missouri.Ability to
travel up to 50% to various Schreiber, Supplier or Customer
Locations in USA/LATAM.
